Welcome to the Youth Leadership Development Course

At Horizon Academy, our vision is to develop leaders through transformational learning.

The Youth Leadership Development Course (YLDC) is a two-year program that aims to provide students with continuing Islamic education and leadership training.

Our faculty are experienced instructors, with a strong background in the subject matter and an ability to work with teenagers of all walks of life. 

Our YLDC alumni are college students in different fields of studies including engineering, education, biology, medical sciences, and other fields.

Currently, Horizon Academy offers two levels in this program:

  • YLDC 1 – Foundations in Leadership – Learn More

  • YLDC 2 – Advanced Leadership Development – Learn More

At the end of this program, graduates who fulfill all course requirements are eligible to apply for a paid internship at Horizon Academy.

YLDC 1 - Foundations in Leadership

Overview

 

YLDC 1 utilizes the framework of “The 7 Habits of Effective Teens” by Sean Covey to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to become effective leaders in their schools and communities.

This course:

  1. Introduces leadership qualities
  2. Fosters self-confidence
  3. Empowers students to contribute positively to their surroundings. 

Participants will engage in interactive activities, discussions, and real-world projects to explore different levels of leadership and develop personal time management strategies.

Learning Outcomes

 

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Understand the importance of leadership
  2. Develop effective communication skills
  3. Build positive relationships
  4. Learn to set meaningful goals using techniques like SMART goals and the Time Management Matrix. 
  5. Reflect on their leadership experiences and create personal mission statements for future success. 
  6. Receive a Certificate of Achievement upon completion of all course requirements. 

Expectations

 

Students will be given a combination of instructional sessions in Islamic Studies and Leadership and will be expected to participate in school activities assigned by the leadership instructor. 

Required materials include: “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey.

Course Schedule

 

The course is offered every Sunday from 10:00 AM to 03:00 PM (September to June as per the Horizon Weekend School Calendar). 

Students will be given a lunch break and other smaller breaks in between.

Registration Fees: $75 (non-refundable)

Registration Requirements

 

Age requirement: As of January of the registration year, the student is expected to be at least 14 years old.

YLDC 2 - Advanced Leadership Development

Overview

 

YLDC 2 is designed to equip students with essential knowledge, skills, and strategies to navigate various aspects of life and prepare for future careers. This course:

  1. Focuses on personal development, 
  2. Teaches effective decision-making
  3. Career exploration
  4. Empowers students to become confident, responsible, and impactful leaders. 

Learning Outcomes

 

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Develop crucial leadership skills, 

  2. Gain practical experience in leading others

  3. Acquire the knowledge necessary to make positive contributions to their school and community. 

  4. Learn to think like designers by planning their goals, assessing personal interests and values, and setting short-term and long-term objectives. 

  5. Explore the narratives that shape their identities

  6. Practice mindful awareness for improved well-being

  7. Engage in creative problem-solving

  8. Build confidence through a Good Type Journal. 

  9. Utilize tools like Work-Life View and Odyssey Plans to create three distinct life paths and identify moments of engagement and flow, all while receiving support to overcome obstacles. 

  10. Receive a Certificate of Achievement upon completion of all course requirements.
